Greek-American singer and former “American Idol” contestant Constantine Maroulis has just revealed he’s been “clean and sober” for 20 months.

The performer, who placed sixth on the fourth season of “American Idol” and was adored by fans, has been working steadily for the past several years. He has been touring the US with stage productions, performing in major musicals, and releasing singles.

In September of 2020 he released a well-received music video for his song “Try”.

Constantine Maroulis Talks About Being Sober

Rumors of problems with drugs and alcohol had circulated, but Maroulis had not made many public statements about the issue. However, in a recent interview with “OK! Magazine”, he revealed that he had struggled in the past and is now sober.

“I’ve been actually clean and sober now over 20 months, no drinks”, Maroulis said, “and just kinda working on myself a lot.”

The singer shared that he started making these life changes shortly before lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Maroulis is grateful he made those decisions then, as he thinks lockdown could have been a really ugly time for him had he still been using various substances.

“It started off like, I’m just gonna put this pen down, the vape, the drinks and just chill, and then it was a few months, and then it was six months, then it was a year, then it was now almost two years,” the singer said of his experience. Maroulis has just been taking it one day at a time.

Maroulis, who is now 45 years old, said that at some point he felt he needed to really let go of that lifestyle and focus on a healthier life and future. He said, “at my age, [I’m] like, ‘Why am I doing that?”

Previous Personal Struggles

Previously in his life, Maroulis had faced some legal troubles after a difficult break up and multiple accusations from his ex, Angel Reed. Eventually, his ex dropped the charges and the couple went their separate ways.

The actor’s personal issues clouded his professional accomplishments, including two Tony nominations, one for his leading role as Drew in the popular musical “Rock of Ages”. In 2018, the singer also went on a nationwide “ROCKTOPIA” tour.

Now that Maroulis is on a better path, he is also excited about his latest venture, “The Constantine Maroulis Show”. On it, the singer will feature special guests and perform some of his favorite hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. He also wants to involve listeners in a karaoke-like segment where the two can sing different verses together.

The singer’s radio show will air every Saturday from 5 to 6 PM. The first show aired on Saturday, July 10.
