Greece recorded 580 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, which marks 352 fewer instances of the virus than the 932 cases recorded on Saturday.
Just four of Sunday’s total cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.
Additionally, there are 398 patients with Covid-19 on ventilators on Sunday, which is 18 fewer than the 416 patients undergoing the invasive treatment in the country yesterday, Saturday.
Tragically, 24 people suffering from the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which represents 11 fewer than those who died with the virus on Saturday.
Over 6 million Coronavirus vaccines given in Greece
Greece has administered over 6 million total doses of the coronavirus vaccine, Marios Themistokleous, Greek Secretary General for Primary Health Care, announced on Saturday.
This brings the total number of fully vaccinated Greeks to over 2.2 million, a figure which includes those who have received the two-dose vaccines, like AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna, as well as those who have received the one-dose Johnson and Johnson shot.
Despite the impressive numbers, Themistokleous noted that Greece could progress even faster with its vaccination campaign if the country only had access to more of the shot.
“We could increase the capabilities of the vaccination system at any time, if we had more doses of the vaccine,” Themistokleous noted Saturday.
298 cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Attica alone; 68 in Thessaloniki
Of the 580 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 298 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.
Instances of the virus were particularly high in the center of the city itself, where 107 cases of Covid-19 were identified Sunday.
Tests showed that in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, a total of 68 cases of Covid-19 had been diagnosed in the last 24 hours.
Over 400,000 total coronavirus cases in Greece
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 409,368 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.
Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, just 40 are associated with foreign travel and 1,954 have been linked to contact with a known case.
Of the 398 patients intubated currently, 85.7% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 67.
On Sunday alone, 166 people with the coronavirus were admitted to hospitals in Greece.
Additionally, a total of 2,505 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
The 24 new deaths recorded on Sunday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 12,277; 95.2% of those who have passed away with the virus were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
