George Clooney called again for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece in a recent communication with Janet Suzman, chairwoman of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures, a Greek daily reported on Saturday.

According to Ta Nea, the Hollywood actor told Suzman:

“There are indeed many objects of historical value that must be returned to their original owners. However, none of them is as important as the Marbles of the Parthenon.”

Clooney called on Britain to allow their permanent reunion in their birthplace. “The Parthenon Sculptures must be returned to their original owner,” he was reported as saying.

In a recent interview with the British Sunday paper Observer he revealed how discussions he had with his wife Amal Alamuddin on the fate of the Parthenon Marbles while they were still dating helped forge a strong bond between them.

Clooney recalled the backlash he received from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was then mayor of London, when he argued in favor of the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.

Clooney and his British-Lebanese wife who is a human rights lawyer forged a strong bond because of their interest in campaigning work, and particularly over the issue of the Elgin Marbles.

Alamuddin was acting for the government of Greece in support of their return from the British Museum.

Responding to Greek Reporter’s question back in 2015, Clooney said that it’s a matter of time for the Parthenon Marbles to be back home.

“I had expressed my opinion in the past and it remains the same that these pieces of art will be joined back together and it’s a matter of when and who does it.”

British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures

The British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures is a group of prominent Brits campaigning for the return of the Marbles to Greece.

They say the inspiration came from Melina Mercouri’s passionate appeal to help return the Parthenon Marbles to their rightful home in Athens, at the International Conference of Ministers of Culture in Mexico, August 1982.

The idea to set up a British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles came from James Cubitt, a distinguished British architect.

He firmly believed that the Parthenon Marbles, as integral architectural members of a unique and internationally valuable monument, should be assembled together in a museum as close to the Acropolis as possible.

This would restore the beauty and meaning of the Parthenon, as well as its physical and scholarly integrity.
