A total of 716 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in Greece on Thursday, 142 fewer than the 858 cases that were recorded in the country one day earlier, on Wednesday.

A great number of Thursday’s 716 cases were diagnosed in Attica, where 313 Covid-19 diagnoses were recorded.

Attica is home to Athens, the capital and most populous city in Greece.

Cases are particularly high in Athens itself — where a total of 71 cases were recorded in the center of the city.

In Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, a total of 62 cases were identified in the last 24 hours.

Tragically, 18 people with the virus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which is 14 fewer than those recorded yesterday.

Currently, 268 patients with Covid-19 are now intubated in Greece, 15 fewer than those who were intubated in the country on Wednesday.

UK Variant in Greece

A total of seven new cases of the fast-spreading UK coronavirus variant were diagnosed in Greece on Thursday.

Only one of these cases was discovered during routine checks at Greece’s points of entry, while two were identified in Attica, and four on the island of Crete.

Since it was first identified in the country in early January, a total of 66 cases of the variant have been diagnosed in Greece.

Scientists have determined that the mutation spreads much more quickly than the original virus.

This has led officials to urge citizens to take even stricter anti-virus precautions, including wearing two masks, to best prevent any transmission of the variant.

Additionally — although the data is still under review — early indications have shown that the UK coronavirus variant may also be more lethal than the standard virus as well.

Total 1,095 Covid-19 patients discharged from Greece’s ICUs

In total, 154,796 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of this total, 5,904 are associated with foreign travel, and 48,259 are associated with contact with a known case.

Of the 268 patients intubated currently, 86.2% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 68, and 194 of the patients are male.

Additionally, a total of 1,095 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 18 new deaths recorded on Thursday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 5,742. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering from the virus, a total of 3,374 have been male.

The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 79, and 95.5% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.

Greece remains only country with “green” areas on EU Covid map

Greece remains the only country with “green” zones on the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control’s (ECDC) coronavirus map showing each European country’s Covid-19 status.

The ECDC releases a series of maps each Thursday that indicate the epidemiological circumstances across Europe, based on data for the 14 days up to midnight on Tuesday of each week.

In the map, which combines coronavirus positivity, testing, and notification rates, the whole country is currently “yellow,” indicating a moderate risk, except for the island of Crete, and the Ionian, Cyclades and Dodecanese archipelagos, which are “green.”

The ECDC’s previous comprehensive map, released on January 21, indicated similar findings.

Both then and now, Greece is the only European country with any “green” zones, as the vast majority of the countries are red, indicating high rates of new cases of Covid-19 across Europe.
