Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State during the Trump administration, took to Twitter this week to thank a string of his counterparts all across the world for their friendship and cooperation in the realm of foreign affairs.

Pompeo’s Tweet gushed over the abilities of Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, with whom Pompeo had worked at length during his trips to the country. During his tenure, the US established much warmer ties with Greece, shoring up defense cooperation in many ways, including the stationing of the gigantic troop carrying ship the Herschel “Woody” Williams at Souda Bay on Crete.

Dendias led Pompeo on an extensive tour of the facility there in 2020 as the enormous vessel sat at its new mooring. The huge troop carrier was deployed to Souda Bay naval base in Crete as of October 1.

It marked the first time in 40 years that a US ship has used the joint US-Greece base as a homeport, Stars and Stripes reported.

The ship shifted its homeport from Norfolk, Va., to Souda Bay in order to conduct missions in the Mediterranean, and the waters around East, South, and West Africa, to include the Gulf of Guinea operating with regional partners.

Dendias “Spectacular pro”

In his Wednesday Tweet, Pompeo remarked “The tour of Crete, your home, was memorable. The work that the U.S. and Greece do together in the Eastern Med and elsewhere secures America’s freedom alongside that of the Greek people. Blessings to you and Maraeva Mitsotakis. And my counterpart, FM Dendias, is a spectacular pro,” Pompeo posted on Twitter.

For his part, Dendias thanked the outgoing US Secretary of State for his warm words and “excellent cooperation”, responding to Pompeo’s farewell Twitter post. The Greek Foreign Minister also thanked Pompeo for what he called his “fundamental contribution to the promotion of bilateral ties between Greece and the United States at an unprecedented level.”
