A total of 853 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in Greece on Tuesday, 256 more cases than had been recorded in the country on Monday.

Tragically, 83 people with the virus passed away in the country over the 24-hour-period, which is two fewer than yesterday.

Currently, 491 patients with Covid-19 are intubated in Greece. For weeks, the number of intubated patients in the country had been consistently over 500, as 505 patients were under the intensive treatment on Monday, and 515 on Sunday, so this constitutes a slight improvement.

A large portion of Tuesday’s cases were diagnosed in the areas surrounding Greece’s two largest urban centers — Athens and Thessaloniki.

In Attica, home to the capital city of Athens, there were 242 cases, and in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, there were 179 new cases.

In total, 132,430 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of this total, 5,248 are associated with foreign travel, and 38,804 are associated with contact with a known case.

Of the 491 patients intubated currently, 77.4% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 67, and 156 of the patients are female.

A total of 823 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 83 new deaths recorded on Tuesday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 4,340. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering from the virus, a total of 1,754 have been female.

The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 79, and 95.7% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.

Holiday Virus-Fighting Measures

In order to avoid outbreaks of the virus due to the upcoming holiday celebrations, Greece has released a series of stricter virus measures for the fast-approaching Christmas season.

Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas announced on Tuesday that Greeks who choose to share their Christmas day or New Year’s lunch with family or friends must first send an SMS with the number 6 to leave their home.

Holiday gatherings must be limited to nine people from only two families.
Petsas also stressed that the 10 p.m. curfew will continue to apply during the holidays, warning that “anyone who is out after 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve will be stopped by police.”

Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Chardalias announced on Tuesday that children must not go out caroling door-to-door this year, a beloved Greek tradition, due to the coronavirus.
