A search and rescue operation is under way for two people missing off the island of Lesvos after a boat carrying dozens of migrants sank on Wednesday.
So far, 32 individuals — 15 men, 14 women and three children — have been rescued by vessels from the Coast Guard and the European border agency Frontex, which are operating in the area.
Two Greek patrol boats, one vessel from Frontex and two helicopters were participating in the search and rescue operation.
Greece remains one of the most popular routes into the European Union for people fleeing poverty and conflict in the Mideast, Africa and Asia.
However, the influx to Greece dropped 74% in the first ten months of 2020, compared to the numbers registered during the same period in 2019, according to a report released last week by Frontex.
Some 17,000 crossings into Greece were recorded between January and October of 2020, the agency revealed.
