European Union officials had the opportunity to watch a Greek Air Force aircraft chasing away Turkish F-16 fighter jets that had violated Greek airspace live.
The presentation took place during the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) conference of the 15th Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) High-Level Course (HLC) 2019 – 2020 Module 3.
The conference was held November 2-6 at the Hellenic Air Force Academy (HAFA) in Tatoi, organized by the Directorate of International Relations of the Ministry of National Defense, under the General Director Dr. Konstantinos Balomenos.
The purpose of the Conference was to promote and develop a common understanding of Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) between civilian and military personnel. In addition, CSDP HLC aims to equip the trainees with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully staff leadership positions related to Common Security and Defense policy, crisis management, and military capabilities in the wider CFSP framework.
Greece hosted representatives from EU countries, presenting, inter alia, the Greek positions on Turkey’s aggressive behavior over the Aegean that has escalated in the last 10 months. One of the Greek positions is that Turkey is posing a threat to the security of the whole of Europe.
On the second day of the conference, the European officials watched in real-time Greek fighters jets that were taking off in order to intercept Turkish F-16s that proceeded with three violations of Greece’s National Airspace. This sparked discussions about the magnitude of the Turkish provocation but also how Turkey is trying to generate a hot episode in the Aegean.
After the live video, Dr. Balomenos took the floor and informed the European counterparts that this is a daily reality in the Aegean. He pointed out that Greece has no enmity against Turkey, however, Turkey generates a dangerous situation, which violates any international treaty, while also violating European borders.
