A record-breaking 480 Covid-19 patients are now intubated in Greece and 60 peopleĀ  suffering from the virus died on Wednesday. A total of 3,209 cases were diagnosed in Greece over the last 24 hours.
The 480 patients with Covid-19 who are currently intubated in Greece broke the country’s record of 443, announced just yesterday, Tuesday.
The increased number of intubated patients has put a strain on Greece’s healthcare system, particularly in northern Greece, where the lack of staff and available ICU beds has caused increasing concern among health officials.
On Wednesday, The Greek Minister of Health, Vasilis Kikilias, announced that ten nurses from the island of Crete would travel to Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, in order to assist in the city’s ICUs.
The nurses, all experienced in working in such units, are set to arrive in Thessaloniki, the country’s second largest city, on Thursday.
Of the 3,209 new cases announced in the country on Wednesday, just 29 were identified during testing at Greeceā€™s points of entry.
For much of the pandemic, the bulk of daily cases have been recorded in the areas surrounding Greece’s two largest urban centers, Athens and Thessaloniki.
Although this is still true, since 905 new cases were recorded in Thessaloniki and 564 in Attica, home to Athens, on Wednesday, the new cases also show that the virus has gripped cities and towns across the rest of the country as well.
The northern Greek city of Pella, and Larissa, in Central Greece, are on high alert after they recorded triple-digit case numbers on Wednesday — 166 and 207, respectively.
In total, 82,034 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,714 are associated with foreign travel and 20,917 with contact with a known case.
Of the 480 intubated patients, 81.0% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 65, and 148 of the patients are women. A total of 410 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.
The 60 new deaths recorded on Wednesday bring the number of total fatalities in the country to 1,288. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, a total of 523 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 80, and 97.4% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
