A record-breaking 443 patients are now intubated in Greece and 59 people with Covid-19 died on Tuesday, as the country marks its tenth day under lockdown. A total of 2,422 cases were diagnosed in Greece over the last 24 hours.
Tuesday’s 443 intubations have added even more stress to the country’s hospitals, many of which in the north of Greece are near capacity.
Doctors have called out for Greeks to adhere strictly to anti-virus measures, as they fear that the country could soon become like Italy at the beginning of the pandemic, where hospitals were inundated with Covid patients.
A total of 513 of Tuesday’s cases were located in Attica, home of Greece’s capital city of Athens, and 595 were detected in the country’s second largest city, Thessaloniki.
Of the 2,422 new cases announced on Tuesday, just six were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.
In total, 78,825 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,685 are associated with foreign travel and 20,225 with contact with a known case.
Of the 443 intubated patients, 81.5% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 65, and 143 of the patients are women. A total of 392 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.
The 63 new deaths recorded on Tuesday bring the number of total fatalities in the country to 1,228. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, a total of 502 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 80, and 97.2% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
