A staggering 400 patients are now intubated in Greece and 59 people with Covid-19 died Monday as the second wave of the coronavirus reaches its peak in the country. A total of 2,198 cases were diagnosed in Greece over the one-day period.
The record-breaking 400 intubations, recorded as the country finds itself in the middle of a second nationwide lockdown, have caused even greater anxiety among Greek health officials and health workers, who have noted that many hospitals in northern Greece are now near capacity.
The state is rushing to fill ICUs with new empty beds for coronavirus patients in order to avoid catastrophes like what was seen in Italy during the beginning of the pandemic, where hospitals were overwhelmed by the flood of Covid patients who required urgent, complex medical care.
A total of 492 of Monday’s cases were located in Attica, home of Greece’s capital city of Athens, and 491 were detected in the country”s second largest city, Thessaloniki. The northern Greek cities of Drama and Pella also recorded cases in the triple digits, raising alarm in these areas.
Of the 2,198 new cases announced on Monday, just 21 were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.
In total, 76,403 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,675 are associated with foreign travel and 19,638 with contact with a known case.
Of the 400 intubated patients, 79.5% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 65, and 126 of the patients are women. A total of 383 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.
The 59 new deaths recorded on Monday bring the number of total fatalities in the country to 1,165. Of those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, a total of 473 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away from Covid-19 is 80, and 97.2% of them were over the age of 70 or had underlying health issues.
