On Sunday, a record of 35 people with Covid-19 lost their lives, and 228 people with the virus were intubated, the largest number of intubated patients recorded in one day since the start of the pandemic in Greece. A total of 1,914 cases were diagnosed in the country.
Of the total new cases announced on Sunday, 39 were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.
In total, 56,698 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,429 are associated with foreign travel and 15,678 with contact with a known case.
There are currently a record 228 intubated patients in intensive care units around Greece. Their median age is 66, and 57 of the patients are women.
The rapid increase in intubated patients has led to a strain on the country’s healthcare system, as Covid-19 units in hospitals around the country are running out of free hospital beds. Some ICUs have had to move beds from other units to make room for incoming Covid-19 patients.
Of the intubated patients, 88.2% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. A total of 323 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country.
The 35 new deaths recorded on Sunday bring the number of total fatalities in the country to 784. Of those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, 316 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away from Covid-19 is 79, and 96.4% of them were over the age of 70 or had underlying health issues.
