After a spike in cases of Covid-19, Greece entered a nation-wide lockdown on the early morning hours of Saturday. Police have been stationed around the city on Saturday to be sure that citizens are observing the anti-virus measures.

After Athenians lined up outside of shops on Friday before the lockdown, the once-bustling capital city is notably empty. Few people can be seen walking their dogs or going out for exercise.
At the Prime Minister’s announcement of another lockdown, many residents of the city rushed out of Athens for the countryside, leading to traffic jams on roadways leading out of the city.

On Saturday, the roadways were completely clear, except for a very small number of cars and police vehicles stopping drivers to check if they had reported their movement by text message or official document.
The lockdown, which will last until November 30, resembles the initial lockdown in the country in the Spring.
Residents must limit movements to those most necessary–such as shopping for food and medicine, helping others in an emergency, physical exercise, taking children to school, walking their pets, and seeking medical care.
These movements must be reported, by either SMS or with an official document, and masks must be worn at all times when outside of the home.
Retail stores are closed, and restaurants, cafes, and bars work only with delivery.
Kindergartens, grade schools, and special education schools at all levels will remain open, while highschools and universities are closed. Students will continue their education through virtual classes.
