Covid Cases Over 2,000 Friday, One Day Before Nationwide Lockdown

A total of 2,448 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in the country over the last day, and 14 deaths were recorded in those who had suffered with the virus. Currently, a record-breaking 196 patients with the virus are intubated in hospitals around the country.
This comes after 2,917 cases were recorded yesterday, Thursday — by far the highest number of Covid-19 cases recorded in Greece in a one-day period since the start of the pandemic.
Starting tomorrow, Saturday, at 6:00 AM, Greeks will be under a second country-wide lockdown in order to curb the spread of the virus.
Of the total new cases announced on Friday, 63 were identified during testing at Greece’s points of entry.
Attica, home to Greece’s capital city of Athens, has 493 of Friday’s 2,448 cases, and Thessaloniki, Greece’s second most populous city, has 683 cases.
In total, 52,254 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus. Of this total, 4,369 are associated with foreign travel and 15,192 with contact with a known case.
There are currently 196 intubated patients in intensive care units around Greece. Their median age is 66, and just 45 are women.
Of the intubated patients, 91.3% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. A total of 315 patients have been discharged from ICUs in the country.
The 14 new deaths recorded on Friday bring the number of total fatalities in the country to 715. Of those who lost their lives after suffering with the virus, 279 have been women.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 was 79, and 96.5% of them were over the age of 70 or had underlying health issues.
