Joe Biden on Track for Victory; Donald Trump Deploys Lawyers

Democratic challenger Joe Biden stopped short of declaring victory on Wednesday but claimed it was “clear” he would hit the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, as Republicans mount legal challenges in some key states.

Addressing the nation from the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware, appearing alongside Kamala Harris, said “I‘m not here to declare that we won, but I am here to report that when the count is finished, we will be the winner,” Biden said.

“My fellow Americans, yesterday once again proved democracy is the heartbeat of this nation,” Biden said.

He added: “We the people will not be silenced, we the people will not be bullied, we the people will not surrender.”

He also said that “We need to stop treating our opponents as enemies.” He called for the country to “unite” and “come together” after the election.

Polling results suggest he will gain the 270 electoral college votes need to secure the presidency, but Donald Trump’s campaign says it is suing to halt vote count in the crucial states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

The campaign accuses Democrat officials of forcing observers to stay 25 feet or more from the counting process, “leaving no meaningful way whatsoever for our observers to do their jobs”.

Here are the crunch states that have yet to declare results:

Arizona: Traditionally Republican but a key battleground this year. Biden is ahead with 86% of the vote counted and some US networks have projected victory for him already. However, Arizona election officials are now being sued by a voter who says she and other Trump voters were told to use Sharpie markers when voting. American voters must use ink pens when voting in order for the ballot counting machines to tabulate votes correctly.

Georgia: Another traditionally Republican state that has become a tight race this year. Trump is narrowly ahead at the moment, but ballots in Atlanta and the surrounding suburbs are still being counted.

North Carolina: The margin is narrowing in this competitive swing state. With 95% of the vote in, Trump is ahead with 50.1% to Biden’s 48.7%. However, North Carolina election officials have stated that they will continue counting ballots until next Thursday, November 12.

Nevada: Biden is facing a tougher-than-expected fight here. He currently has a razor-thin lead. On Thursday morning, lawyers for President Trump announced that they were suing the state because they had determined that 10,000 people who had cast votes in Nevada either no longer lived there or were in fact deceased.

Wisconsin: A major Midwestern battleground, it backed Democrats for over two decades before opting for Trump in 2016. Here, Biden has a narrow lead with almost all votes counted – but the Trump camp has already said they want a recount.

Michigan: The rivals are pretty much neck-and-neck here, with a slim Biden lead, but many ballots in Democrat-leaning populated areas, like Detroit, are yet to be counted. Michigan election officials inexplicably announced that they would stop the counting of votes on Tuesday night. When counters resumed their work the next morning, 139,000 new ballots had somehow been found, leading to charges of massive fraud.

Pennsylvania: With 20 electoral college votes, it’s a major political battleground. Trump has a significant lead, but a huge number of mail-in ballots are yet to be counted and a result is not expected until Friday. Legal challenges from the Republicans loom over the result here.

Recently, the electoral laws in Pennsylvania were changed, over the objections of the Legislature, allowing ballots lacking even a signature or a postmark to be counted, for the first time ever.
