Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced 1,678 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, while 140 patients are intubated and nine new deaths are recorded.
On Saturday, Greece exceeded 2,000 daily cases for the first time since the pandemic began. On the same day, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced new, stricter measures for curbing the spread of the pandemic.
According to EODY, 91 cases are associated with known outbreaks and 25 were identified following checks at the country’s gateways. The total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic is 40,929, of which 55.1 percent are men.
Of the total number of cases, 4137 (10.1 percent) are considered to be related to travel from abroad and 13,493 (33.0 percent) are related to already known cases.
Currently there are 140 people treated in ICU with a median age of 66 years. Of those intubated, 37 (26.4 percent) are women and the rest are men. Also, 93.6 percent of intubated patients have an underlying disease or are aged 70 years and older. So far 291 patients have been discharged from ICU.
Finally, more deaths are recorded, bringing the total to 635. Of the casualties, 241 (38.0 percent) are women and the rest men. The median age of the deceased is 79 years and 96.2 percent of them had an underlying illness and / or were 70 years old and over.
