In yet another abrupt about-face after declaring on the weekend that would in fact hold its war games, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, Turkish officials stated on Monday that they had decided to cancel the exercises.
The declaration fro NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Friday, appeared to calm the waters, as Greece and Turkey both decided to cancel their war games which had been scheduled for the other country’s national holidays.
Turkey had even canceled the navigational telex, or Navtex, in which it had blocked off an area in the Mediterranean for the exercises.
However, late on Friday, the country reversed course, declaring that it would indeed hold its war games on the most important national day in Greece, OXI Day, October 28.
Turkey’s state-run national news agency announced the decision, saying that it was a “one-time move and gesture of goodwill.”
Citing unnamed sources, Anadolu went on to state that the cancellation was a gesture aimed “to show Turkey’s willingness to solve the problems in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean with dialogue.”
