Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced new measures to stop the spread of Covid-19 in a major speech to the Greek public on Thursday. These include the use of masks in all indoor and outdoor spaces around the country, and nighttime curfews in areas which have been highly impacted by the virus.
The curfew will run from 12:30 AM from 5:00 AM, and will be in effect in all areas that are considered at an “orange” or “red” risk level. This includes Kozani and Kastoria, which are “red” areas, and are already under strict measures that resemble local lockdowns.
The curfew also applies to Attica, Thessaloniki, Pella, Boeotia, Larissa, Serres, Achaia, Zakynthos, Heraklion, Thira, Karditsa, Kea-Kythnos, Lesvos, Mykonos, Samos, and Trikala, which are all at level “orange.”
Those who work at night, and anyone in an emergency situation, are exempt from the night-time curfew.
The new measures will begin early this Saturday morning at 6:00 AM.
The announcement comes after record-high numbers of new coronavirus cases were recorded on Wednesday and Thursday, which had 865 and 882 cases, respectively.
After recent data showed that young people aged 18-39 made up the largest portion of new cases, Mitsotakis urged the youth of Greece to take the virus seriously by wearing masks and following social distancing rules.
In his speech, Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of masks, stating that they are “the vaccine before we have a vaccine.”
