Greek Officer Assumes Command of EU Navy Operation in Libya

Captain Theodoros Mikropoulos has officially assumed the position of Commander at Sea for the second half of 2020 for the operation “Irini” at the Taranto naval base in Italy.
The commander’s ship is the frigate “Adrias,” while the naval staff of the company is comprised of 14 Greek staff officers, among others.


According to an announcement by the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS), the Armed Forces are participating in this operation with a frigate, with flights of airborne early warning and control systems, as well as with officers at sea and on the operational staff.
The main mission of Operation Irini is to implement the arms embargo on Libya, in the context of the relevant UN Security Council resolution. The operation involves 21 countries of the European Union. Greece has increased its participation with materiel and staff from the first moment it was ordered to activate.
