Frank Kamberos: The Greek Philanthropist Who Helped Preserve Chicago’s History

The Greek American community of Chicago is mourning the passing of Frank S. Kamberos, a leader of the community who died last week. He was 98.

Kamberos, a native of Chicago, was a man of great generosity, and a businessman who afforded a foothold to many Greek immigrants. He also financed the construction of the National Hellenic Museum’s Frank S. Kamberos Oral History Center.

He attended Illinois Institute of Technology and served in US Air Corps during WWII in England, France, and Germany.

In 1962, along with his brothers, Chris and George, he founded Treasure Island Foods, Inc.

A leader in the community, Kamberos was active in many organizations, including United Hellenic American Congress, Leadership 100, the Hellenic Foundation, and others.

He had served on the Board of Directors of the National Hellenic Museum since 2005. He financed the construction of the Frank S. Kamberos Oral History Center, a digital recording and playback module that houses the stories of the Greek immigrant experience in the United States.

A cornerstone of the Museum’s work to preserve and share the Greek American story, the Oral History Center has grown in the past fifteen years to become the largest depository of Greek American oral histories in the world and an important resource for scholars, genealogists, and the public.
