Greek health authorities announced on Thursday that the number of new coronavirus cases totaled 411, the third-highest daily number since the beginning of the pandemic, and that two new deaths had also occurred in the past 24 hours.
A record 272 of Thursday’s cases were found in the region of Attica.
Currently, 89 patients are intubated in Greek hospitals, a sharp rise compared to Wednesdays’ 78.
Of the new cases, 68 are associated with known outbreaks, and just 26 were discovered through routine testing at Greece’s borders.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Greece now numbers 18,886, 2,961 of which are connected to travel outside of the country, and 7,755 of which can be traced to contact with a case of the virus that had already been confirmed.
The median age of the 89 intubated patients is 70, and just 28 of them are women. Just over 86% of them are either over the age of 70 or have underlying health conditions.
Tragically, two people lost their lives with the virus on Thursday. This brings the total number of deaths with the virus in Greece to 393, of which 249 were males.
Over 96% of those who died with the virus were either over the age of 70 or had underlying health problems.
An outbreak of five cases among hospital staff, including nurses and doctors, at Sotiria Hospital in Athens has caused special alarm today.
The outbreak has shut down the thoracic surgery unit of the hospital, where the cases were identified, in order to halt any further spread of the virus.
