Her decision came a day after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews took the stand at the Covid-19 hotel quarantine inquiry on Friday and made unfavorable comments about Mikakos.
The Health Minister resigned in a letter, saying that she disagreed with Premier Andrews’ comments, stating that she can no longer serve in his cabinet following his statements.
Prior to Mikakos’ resignation, Federal Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and health union representatives had asked for her resignation or firing.
The Health Minister’s critics hold her responsible for the second wave of Covid-19 in Victoria.
“I am deeply sorry for the situation that Victorians find themselves in. In good conscience, I do not believe that my actions led to them,” the Greek-Australian politician wrote in a statement.
