Greece Hails Spirit of Philhellenism in US' Parthenon Sculptures Initiative

Greece has invited the eighteen members of the US House of Representatives who have formally requested, in a letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the repatriation of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece, to visit the country.
Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said on Thursday she is thankful for the letter of the 18 US members of Congress and invites them to come to Athens as soon as the pandemic conditions allow.
She also pointed out that “with this initiative they confirm their admiration and respect for the values inherited from classical antiquity by the western world,” and added that “it makes us believe that the new spirit of philhellenism that we see in Europe has solid roots beyond the Atlantic.”
The members of Congress, which contained both Republicans and Democrats, included the Chair of the Foreign Affairs subcommittee for Europe and the Chairs of the Oversight and Rules Committees.
They urged the British government to enter serious negotiations with the Greek government for the return of the Sculptures to the land of their creation by 2021.
