An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale has just struck south of the Greek island of Crete.
Just after 7:30 PM the temblor shook the ground 19 km (11 miles) southwest of Arvi, on Crete. According to Greece’s Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake had a focal depth of 25.8 km (16 miles).
The epicenter of the quake was an area 69 km (43 miles) southeast of Heraklion. Local reports say that the shaking should even be felt in Chania.
From initial reports of a 5.3 earthquake, the Geodynamic Institute revised its finding upward to show that the actual force was that of a 5.4 earthquake.
However, the Euro-Mediterranean Institute pegged the temblor much higher, at 5.7, adding that the focal depth was located 56 km (34 miles) into the earth.
