A freighter bound for Turkey on Wednesday rescued a total of 151 migrants and refugees who had been packed on a yacht which was adrift in the sea northeast of the island of Amorgos.
As has been the case during the past several days, strong winds were blowing in the area, reaching up to 8 on the Beaufort scale. The rescued individuals will be transferred to a Turkish port.
According the testimonies of those who were rescued, their alleged trafficker fell into the water and is now missing.
The Greek Coast Guard has launched a rescue operation to locate the missing man in which nearby sailing ships, a Navy helicopter, one open-seas Coast Guard vessel and another two Coast Guard vessels are taking part.
