Erdogan Claims Greece, Cyprus Responsible for Tensions in Call with Merkel

In a telephone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that Greece and Cyprus are at fault for the conflicts brewing in the eastern Mediterranean, according to a new report from Reuters.
Erdogan said that he believes European support for Greece and Cyprus is “unjust.” This comes after a period of intense tension between Athens and Ankara after Turkey sent its oil and gas exploratory vessel Oruc Reis to the Eastern Mediterranean, accompanied by warships from the Turkish Navy.
The dispute stems from contesting claims regarding the extent of the maritime borders of the neighboring countries. Turkish ships had repeatedly crossed into Greek waters in search of energy deposits in the Mediterranean before the Oruc Reis incident.
Despite calls for dialogue from world leaders, tensions only continue to rise between the two countries.
While Cyprus, Greece, and France have supported a harsh approach with Turkey, including sanctions, the nations of Germany, Italy, and Spain have advocated for a more mild stance.
