German Chancellor Merkel and French President Macron at Thursday’s press conference

Two of Europe’s most powerful leaders, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, charged on Thursday that Europe must protect the sovereignty of the borders of its member nations.
The two leaders made their remarks at a joint news conference at the French presidential summer palace, Fort de Bregancon, in southern France.
Macron noted that sovereignty must be protected “when it is cast into doubt.” He also noted that his country and Germany would “act in a coordinated way” regarding this issue and that both nations desire want a de-escalation of tensions in the region.
The leaders stated that both of their nations are in agreement in that they must protect stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, with Macron adding that respect for international law and the sovereignty of EU member states, was paramount.
It was notable that Macron employed the word “complementarity” to describe the attitude taken by both Germany and France regarding the Mediterranean, noting as he did so that that the two countries should act in tandem with one another.
“Europe must protect the sovereignty of its members when it is called into question. We desire a de-escalation of tensions and respect for sovereignty,” the French president added.
German Chancellor Merkel remarked that Germany “has been in favor of dialogue, but the threat of sovereignty of EU member states will not be tolerated.”
