Greek health authorities announced on Wednesday that at least 22 Covid-19 cases were detected at a nursing home in the town of Evosmos, near Thessaloniki, as the country on Tuesday announced theĀ  highest number of cases in a single day since the beginning of the health crisis.
Among the cases at the “Papageorgiou” nursing home are 15 elders and seven members of staff.
According to reports, the spread of the virus seems to have come from an elderly woman who returned to the nursing home after a visit to a doctor.
The nursing home accommodates a total of 45 elderly people. Patients have been transferred to local hospitals.
On Tuesday, Greece announced 269 new coronavirus cases, the highest number in a single day since the beginning of the health crisis. There were two deaths in the same span of time, bringing the total of those who have died with the virus to 232.
Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias pointed out the importance of face masks against the spread of the virus in an interview with Antenna TV on Wednesday adding that many people aged from 20 to 40 are asymptomatic but transmit the virus.
Referring to the vaccine he said that it is estimated that it will be available at the end of 2020 or early 2021, not only from one company, and reiterated that priority will be given to the vulnerable groups.
