Michael Economou

Respected film industry veteran Michael Economou, a long-time member of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival’s (LAGFF) Advisory Board, died on July 23.

During his long career, Economou worked as an editor on over forty Hollywood productions. He won an Emmy in 1971 for his work on “The Bold Ones” for NBC, receiving the distinction of Outstanding Achievement in Film Editing for Entertainment Programming. In addition, the 1976 documentary “Off the Edge” that he helped produce and edit netted an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

Known as a hardworking, intelligent, kind and humorous man, Economou generously shared his passion for film with young people. He taught at USC School of Cinema and conducted international writing seminars and workshops.

As a true jack of all trades in the entertainment industry, Michael was a member of the Writers Guild, Producers Guild, Film Editors Guild, and Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

The LAGFF made an announcement regarding his death, stating, “Michael was always one of the first to offer his advise, his assistance and above all, his love for the Festival. He loved films, dearly, and we are going to miss him”.
