Greece announced on Monday that it is considering resuming flights to and from the U.S. by the end of July — under the precondition that tourists will show a “negative” COVID-19 test.
The decision was made at a meeting to review the national plan for protection against the coronavirus held earlier on Monday, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Government spokesman Stelios Petsas said that there is consideration of resuming flights to/from other non-EU countries.
He also confirmed that Greece will resume direct flights to/from the UK on July 15 and announced it will resume direct flights to/from Sweden on July 22, 2020.
Greece will also step up testing for Covid-19 at the land borders, especially at Promachonas and Albania. “The government is constantly monitoring developments, talking to the experts and taking any measures that are necessary,” Petsas said.
From July 1 to July 11, a total of 67,797 tests were conducted at the country’s gates with 218 (0.35%) of them being “positive”. The number of confirmed cases at Promachonas are four times more than those detected at the Athens international airport, for example, Petsas added.
