Greece was recently awarded “Green” status on Belgium’s list of EU countries whose citizens are allowed to visit, meaning that tourists will not have to be subjected to Covid-19 testing or quarantines.

The announcement came early Thursday, July 9, when the Belgian Foreign Ministry released their updated list of countries whose citizens have various levels of clearance. The document itself is organized by colors, based on the severity of the coronavirus pandemic, including green, orange and red.

Originally, Greece was listed under the “orange” category on the list, despite the country’s epidemiological profile and low rates of infection, especially compared to that of Belgium, and that status continued up until Wednesday night.

Under this category, Greek tourists were strongly discouraged from visiting Belgium, and upon entering, had to have a coronavirus test and agree to possibly be quarantined if the results were positive.

Athens initiated talks with Brussels on Wednesday in order to debate the country’s inclusion on Belgium’s elevated risk list for travel. A second round of discussions also took place on Thursday regarding the issue.

Belgian representative Yv Van Latem went on television channel RTBF to explain that the list would indeed be revised, with Greece also receiving confirmation in its change in status.

The twenty other countries that are included on Belgium’s “Green” list with Greece include: Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Latvia, Croatia, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

Nations on the “Orange” list includes Cyprus, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Portugal and Spain. Those who arrive in Belgium from these destinations are tested and quarantined.

Countries on the “Red” list, which indicates that no citizens from these particular nations will be able to travel into Belgium include Finland, Ireland, Malta, and Norway.
