The American airline Delta has apparently scrapped all of its July flights to the Greek capital of Athens from New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport.
Media reports say that the cancellations have now been confirmed by a Delta agent.
The United States was placed on a list of banned countries by the EU just before the beginning of the height of the July tourist season, along with the UK, Sweden and Russia, all nations the EU deemed as unsafe due to their high rates of Covid-19.
After opening its borders to most nations on July 1, Greece has experienced an increased number of infections, with the clear majority of those occurring in travelers who had just entered the country.
July 15 marks the next possible date on which foreign tourists from the previously-banned countries could be allowed into Greece, which has assiduously traced its coronavirus cases and instituted a successful, if draconian, lockdown on its own citizens during the Spring.
This is a developing story.
