As the arrival by car of tourists from the Balkan countries continues at a steady pace since Greece’s borders opened on July 1st, in the Promachonas crossing from Bulgaria there are lines up to 15km long (9.5 miles) and the wait ranges from two to six hours.
The Promachonas land border crossing is the only one open in northern Greece and serves all Balkan country residents who wish to travel to Greece.
Cars form endless lines in order to enter the country, sometimes reaching 15 kilometers long. At the same time, the drivers and passengers who are trying to cross the Promachonas border point are being checked for Covid-19 by four National Public Health Organization (EODY) crews, and remain stuck in their vehicles for hours.
The wait for tourists from countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Italy lasted between two to six hours. All travellers from non-Schengen countries are tested for Covid-19, while those from countries in the Schengen zone are tested randomly.
President of the National Public Health Organization Panagiotis Arkoumaneas, was in Promachonas from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning, together with the EODY staff already operating there.
