US Embassy in Athens Gearing Up For Independence Day in Colorful Display

The historic Chancery Building of U.S. Embassy Athens, designed by Walter Gropius – one of the most prominent figures of modern architecture – has been lighted in the colors of the American flag as the U.S mission in Greece is preparing to mark Independence Day.
Keeping in line with Greek government regulations enacted to counter the spread of COVID-19, the U.S. mission in Athens and Thessaloniki has decided to take this year’s July 4 reception virtual and celebrate in a series of events and social media engagements.

US Ambassador Pyatt, US Mission representatives and Embassy friends have sent their wishes together with a message of gratitude and hope for the world, in a video that aims to capture the meaning of independence and freedom, and the way these ideals connect our two countries.

The Mission redirected funds normally used for receptions to donate meals to Greek NGOs “Apostoli” (Mission) and “Kivotos tou Kosmou” (Ark of the World) in Athens, and to “Faros tou Kosmou” (Lighthouse of the World) and the soup kitchen of the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Thessaloniki.
“Philanthropy is an American tradition, a Greek word, and a deeply shared value. I can attest that all of us who serve at the US Mission are grateful for Greece’s response to the pandemic, where everyone united with resilience and compassion in order to save lives,” Pyatt said during a visit to Apostoli to deliver meals on Thursday.

Children at the center also had the opportunity to ask the ambassador questions about his life and travels in Greece.
