Greek-American Couple Hospitalized for Covid-19 After Arriving in Greece

An elderly Greek-American couple who recently arrived via a transit flight to Greece were rushed to the hospital after testing positive for Covid-19.
The couple was initially cleared of having the coronavirus after undergoing testing at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport about ten days ago.
However, the seventy-four-year-old man contracted symptoms of the virus a couple of days later after he and his wife had reached their final destination on the island of Karpathos in the Dodecanese.
He was later admitted to the Venizelio General Hospital in Heraklion, Crete in order to be treated, after developing a fever and feeling generally unwell.

Health authorities were sent to track down all the contacts the man had made following the stringent new protocols and health mandates that have been put in place.
After the victim’s wife was also tested, the results showed that she too had contracted the virus and was indeed infected. She was rushed to the same hospital as her husband in Heraklion and is currently being treated in the Covid-19 Unit.
Due to direct flights from the US continuing to be banned, the couple had entered Greece legally,  through a connecting flight through a third country.
As Greece continues to open its borders slowly to international tourists from several countries, the US remains on the banned list due to having higher rates of the coronavirus.
