As Greece opens its borders to international tourists, various ferry routes between the country and Italy have also been reestablished amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
On late Wednesday, July 1, a ferry route linking Italy to the Greek port city of Igoumenitsa opened to passengers, allowing them to travel between the two vacation hotspots. The ship came from Brindisi, a city located in the region of Apulia in southern Italy.
The trip comes after over three months of suspended sailings due to safety protocols implemented in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Currently, both the National Public Health Organization and local port authority are implementing measures that will allow passengers to safely travel between both countries. Various checks will also be put in place when tourists arrive in Greece from Italy as well.
Four ferries from Ancona, Bari, and Brindisi also arrived on Igoumenitsa early on Thursday, June 2. Over 1,000 passengers from Italy are also expected to arrive in Patras on seven ferries later in the day as well.
Two ferries had previously docked at the Patras port on Wednesday to transport a large number of trucks and drivers from Italy, the same day that Greece opened up its airports.
As ferries were only allowed to transport trucks from mid-March up until now due to the pandemic, the revival of tourism has presented a new frontier for the industry to cross.
