Elementary schools have now closed their doors in Paramythia, Epirus after health authorities there recorded an increase in the number of of confirmed coronavirus infections over the weekend.
A team from the National Health Organization was sent on Monday to Paramythia in order to conduct coronavirus testing on the population. Another group was also sent to 33 different communities across the municipality of Souli as well.
They discovered that the number of infections had reached seven within the town of Paramythia, which has a total population of 2,700 residents.
One patient who tested positive for the coronavirus was a 52-year-old woman who was later admitted to the Ioannina University Hospital.
Health authorities also tested the victim’s close contacts and learned that three of her family members — as well as two family friends — were also positive.
Exact information regarding how the woman contracted the virus is still unknown. As a precaution, schools in Paramythia will be shut down for the present in order to prevent the outbreak from spreading.
Another school in Xanthi, northern Greece was also closed on Monday after a student tested positive for the virus on Sunday.
The increase in infections has also made many local authorities wary. The mayor of Pogoni, for example, expressed his concern about the opening of the Kakavia border crossing with Albania on July 1.
According to official information from the Public Health Organization, the total number of coronavirus cases has reached 3,266 in Greece, with 1,826 individuals infected by known carriers of the virus.
