Friends and family, along with the entire Greek-American community of Astoria, are mourning the tragic sudden loss of 49-year-old schoolteacher Anastasia Paterekas, who was found dead at her home on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

At 9:09 p.m., New York City police were initially called to the apartment at 23-81 32nd Street, Astoria in order to respond to an 80-year-old man who was reportedly suffering a mental breakdown.

When police and EMS personnel arrived at the home, they located both the man, who was later confirmed to be the father of the beloved teacher, and Anastasia Paterekas, who was initially believed to be unconscious.

First responders later verified that she had passed away at the scene, and they transported her father to the NYC Health & Hospitals’ Elmhurst facility for treatment.

According to the medical examiner’s report, Anastasia Patereka’s death was due to a stroke that she had suffered while her father had been at the hospital, recovering from an operation.

After being discharged, he had returned home, only to find his daughter lying unresponsive on the floor.

A funeral was held for Anastasia Paterekas at noon on Monday, June 15, 2020 at St. Dimitrios Cathedral in Astoria.

The service was attended only by close family and friends due to the severe restrictions on gatherings in New York due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Paterekas family is originally from Thessaloniki, but Anastasia was born in Astoria on March 26, 1971 and had lived in the Greek-American neighborhood her whole life. She had spent her entire career as a teacher, having grown up with her parents’ strong support for both her and her siblings’ education.
