Greece's Politicians Clash in Parliament — Behind Plexiglass Separators

Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis and opposition leader Alexis Tsipras debate behind plexiglass separators

Whereas most legislatures around the world have suspended their operations due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Hellenic Parliament is continuing its activities, albeit with extra precautions.
Political leaders on Thursday clashed over the Covid-19 outbreak and the government’s response to it as they spoke from the rostrum behind plexiglass separators.
It was an unusual scene watching Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and leader of the main opposition Alexis Tsipras argue their cases, but it also reminded everyone of the Greek success in dealing with the outbreak.
“The government made a very clear choice; it protected the health and lives of the citizens, subordinating its economic planning to this supreme goal,” Mitsotakis stated with great satisfaction.
“As a country we have spent lots of money but we met the first health goal we had set, while other countries that also spent lots of money did not have the same success,” he added.
PM Mitsotakis, warned, however, that “the repercussions of this coronavirus attack will undoubtedly be dramatic and on several levels, as this is an unprecedented crisis. No other generation has experienced something like this for over a century.”
Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said that many of the frontline workers who the premier is now hailing as heroes in the crisis, he had previously viewed as “surplus” civil servants.
Tsipras also accused the ruling party of using the crisis to further the interests of  entrepreneurs who are friendly to the government, including those in the health sector, and of establishing a totalitarian and undemocratic system of government.
