Fires at Greek Island Migrant Camp Force Evacuation

Two fires that broke out on Sunday evening outside the migrant camp on the island of Samos, in the eastern Aegean, have destroyed a number of shacks built by asylum seekers outside the perimeter of the camp.
Firefighters who had battled the blazes through the night have since put out the fires. There is no information yet regarding any injuries or the cause of the fires.
An investigation by the Fire Service is ongoing but local media have reported that the first conflagration began during a clash between different ethnic groups at the camp, and that migrants fueled the later fire in a bid to be taken out of the camp.
These reports have not been confirmed.
The non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders said in a tweet that the earlier fire left approximately 100 people without shelter after their tents were destroyed in the fire.
It is not known how many other migrants have been left without shelter as the result of the larger fire, but some of them have been escorted by police to a square in the nearby town of Vathy.
