Is Coronavirus Lockdown Changing Our Culinary Preferences For Good?

The lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic is gradually bringing new culinary and dietary habits to the Greek society, according to market trends observed over the last few weeks.
The fact that millions of us are either working from home, or stuck at home without having a great deal to do, has created a new reality where food plays a very prominent role in our everyday activities.
During the first days of the coronavirus crisis, many people rushed to supermarkets to buy essentials, including eggs, milk, flour, and pasta.
People stockpiled mass quantities of tins of beans or processed meats and the like and began preparing for a worst-case scenario, where food wouldn’t be in abundance anymore or perhaps when they themselves would be ill and unable to shop at all.
However, as the weeks of quarantining progressed around the world, people began adopting new gastronomic habits.
DIY videos suddenly went viral online and people started thinking seriously about baking their own bread, cakes and other desserts and even growing their own vegetables and fruits for the first time.
Others have apparently turned to purchasing simple yet nutritious choices, including different kinds of nuts, which are packed with calories and good fats.
Another product high on the lists of buyers in Greece in the last several weeks has been the ancient elixir known as “Greek mountain tea.”
People in Greece have always associated mountain tea with warding off or fighting illness, as it is considered an extremely beneficial beverage which not only is pleasant and comforting to drink but also seems to relieve a range of flu symptoms.
No matter what additional changes this crisis might bring to our lives, two things remain clear: people have a renewed focus on health, and our culinary creativity is definitely booming!
