Greek Police Sets Checkpoints at Ports, Highways to Halt Easter Exodus

Greek police and coast guard are making strict checks in ports and national highways to thwart residents of metropolitan areas from travelling to the provinces for Easter.
As the death toll in Greece has reached 89 – after a 67-year-old woman passed away on Friday morning – health authorities fear that the traditional exodus to the countryside for Easter might further spread the covid-19.
According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the measures that have been put into effect as of Wednesday will be enforced.
There will be roadblocks on all tolls on national highways, side roads and key points of the country’s road network. At the same time, there will be air surveillance, with drones and helicopters of the Hellenic Police, but also of the Fire Brigade, in order to identify any violators.
Strict controls will be carried out at the same time at airports, railway stations and buses, while the Coast Guard will make checks on all ferry ports without exception.
Also, according to police sources, there will be continuous patrols both in large urban centers and in smaller cities, as well as in villages to prevent any gatherings of citizens, especially on Easter Sunday.
Authorities have noticed that several people use outrageous methods and excuses to circumvent the safety measures, so stricter penalties have been decided.
The fine for this who break the curfew without reasonable excuse will double, to €300 from  the €150 that it was before.
Additionally, if one travels by car to another town or city, the license plates of the vehicle will be seized by the state for sixty days and the individual(s) will be forced to return to their place of residence immediately.
So far, the Greek state has collected €4 million in fines for not adhering to the preventive measures.
