An Albanian seamstress who owns a small sewing workshop in the town of Grevena, northern Greece, has volunteered to manufacture masks for the local hospital, showing that solidarity and philotimo in coronavirus times is tearing down borders and spreading to all nationalities.
Elona Agoli, an immigrant from neighboring Albania, has worked night and day to produce the 600 masks, which she donated to the doctors and nursing staff at Grevena Hospital.
Speaking to public broadcaster ERT, Agoli says that at these times “money is not important.”
“We are not rich people, but we feel that we should give back to the country that has done so much for us,” the seamstress said.
“What I am doing is not as important as the battles doctors, nurses, the ambulance service, the police give every day for all of us.”
Agoli, who has lived in Greece for more than twenty years, says that hospitals from other areas in Greece have gotten in touch with her for help as well. She told reporters “I will help as much as I can.”
