Surgeons at the Ophthalmological Clinic of the General Hospital of Corfu (Kerkyra) Island in Greece announced on Monday that an innovative major surgery took place at their facility several days ago.
The statement from the hospital notes that its doctors successfully combined the implantation of an artificial iris with a glaucoma operation in the eye of a patient suffering from post-traumatic defects.
This marks the first time ever that this surgery has been successfully performed in Greece.
The innovative surgery, which was carried out on Wednesday, January 29, was officially announced on Monday.
According to the Corfu General Hospital (CGH) announcement, “the specific artificial iris was introduced for the first time in Greece at the request of the CGH Ophthalmological Clinic and the positive response of the Hospital’s scientific council and board.
“It is a high-quality artificial iris in the patient’s size and colour, whose cost was fully covered by the CGH and which has been implanted for the first time in Greece.”
