Athens Intensifies Diplomatic Moves Ahead of Crucial Berlin Conference on Libya

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke on Saturday on the phone with the President of the European Council Charles Michel at the latter’s initiative and with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the issue of Libya.
According to government sources in Athens, all the issues referring to Greece were discussed with a focus on Turkey, Libya and the Berlin Conference.
During the talks, it was reaffirmed that the president of the European Council is keeping tight lipped on the conclusions reached at the EU Summit on December 12 and 13, 2019.
Later, Mitsotakis spoke with President von der Leyen who will be present, along with Charles Michel, at the Berlin Conference on Sunday.
During the call, it was reaffirmed that the defense of the European Council’s conclusions framework and the Greek positions will be expressed by the EU representatives at tomorrow’s Berlin Conference.
Greek Foreign Minister’s Actions
The Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias spoke on Saturday on the phone with the Foreign Minister of France Jean-Yves Le Drian and discussed the developments in Libya ahead of the imminent Berlin Conference too, according to Greek diplomatic sources quoted by AMNA news agency.
On Friday evening, Dendias had already spoken on the phone and discussed the same issue with his United Arab Emirates counterpart Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Turkish President Erdogan’s Stance
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned on Saturday that Europe needs to support Ankara’s actions on the issue of Libya, if the EU does not want any further problems with the conflict in the country.
Ankara has declared that it provides military support to the Tripoli-based government of Libya.
Erdogan’s remarks were made in an article published by Politico website.
