Low Temperatures Create Crete's Only Heart-Shaped Frozen Lake (video)

A drone video recently captured the wild beauty of Crete’s region of Omalos in Chania, where the latest round of snow and low temperatures have created some stunning wintertime scenery.
The artificial lake of OAK, at the heart of the plateau of Omalos, froze solid due to the very low temperatures experienced in recent days, and the snow which blanketed the surrounding area created a magical backdrop to the reservoir.
The famous summertime destination island of Crete is well known for its crystal-clear waters and endless sunny days, but this January transformed its higher altitudes into something which is more reminiscent of Switzerland than Greece.
Temperatures normally don’t fall quite this low on Crete, and frost is only seen at extremely high altitudes, but this time nature chose differently, offering a rarely seen and visually stunning spectacle.
Snow and ice seen against Omalos’ completely Mediterranean scenery created a unique juxtaposition of climates, as seen in the video below.
