Thousands of people dressed in festive Santa Claus gear took part in the ninth-annual “Santa Run” through the streets of Chania, Crete on Thursday.
The runners made their way through the the streets of the historic city center, its shopping district and the old Venetian harbor in their charitable quest to raise money for sick children.
Shops along the route provided refreshments to the runners – mostly beer rather than water, however, in keeping with this most festive time of year.
Musicians and dancers were ever-present during the event, for which no medals are given out and no official times are kept.
The Chania run, which has always been held in order to raise money for charity, turned its efforts this year toward children who are suffering from health problems.
Organizers state that over the last eight years of the Santa Run event, a total of more than 400,000 euros has been raised for various good causes.
