Severe Weather Hits Greece's Epirus Region on Sunday

A weather system bringing severe storms to western Greece hit the region of Arta particularly hard on Sunday, causing widespread flooding in homes and along area roadways.
Heavy rainfall caused the Bousis River to burst its banks and flood cropland, livestock farms and warehouses, even approaching the city limits of Arta.

The region’s old national highway had to be closed due to the torrents of rushing water, forcing traffic to be diverted away from the area.
The National Observatory’s Meteo weather service reported that 100 mm (4 inches) of rain fell in Epirus on Sunday, the most seen anywhere in the country from this storm.

Additional weather-related problems were also reported on Crete, where gusty winds disrupted air and ferry travel on Sunday, with ships docked and planes grounded for several hours during the busy Christmas travel period.
An aircraft heading from Athens to the Cretan city of Iraklio on Sunday was even forced to return to the capital’s Eleftherios Venizelos  International Airport for safety reasons due to the inclement weather.
