Women of Zakynthos Create Giant Crocheted Christmas Tree (video)

A group of women on the Greek island of Zakynthos spent a great deal of their free time this past year painstakingly crocheting squares of a Christmas tree which was eventually pieced together just in time for the festive season.
The women belonging to the cultural association of the village of Agala used their imagination and passion to create something completely unique for Christmas. Using their skills in the ancient art of crocheting, they began the project in late September.
“We wanted to create something different and imaginative to decorate our village at Christmas,” said Panagiota Kladi.
The women, who gathered together every Sunday to work together, eventually crocheted a total of 382 large squares of all different colors which came together to produce this amazing result. The tree, perhaps the only crocheted Christmas tree anywhere in the world, also sports its own beautifully-crafted crocheted ornaments.
