Famed Greek cinematographer Phedon PapamichaelĀ is drawing praise for his collaboration with director James Mangold in the retro car racing film “Ford v Ferrari”.
As Director of Photography in the production, Papamichael’s sense of realism while filming brings audiences into the story and creates a sense of connection with the main characters.
“Ford v Ferrari” focuses on the 1966 Le Mans race, where Carroll Shelby (played by Matt Damon) and race car driver Ken Miles (played by Christian Bale) work with US company Ford to try to beat Enzo Ferrari.
In an interview Papamichael gave to “Variety”Ā he talked about the technicals of filming actors and racing scenes in the movie.
“The approach was getting close to the actors and telling the story through them. Itās about friendship and the passion of pursuing your love, and itās also a corporate movie”, said Papamichael to the entertainment magazine.
This is the cinematographer’s fifth collaborations with Mangold. His very first experience with the director was in 2003’s “Identity”. Since then, the duo has worked together on “Walk the Line”, “3:10 to Yuma” and “Knight and Day”.
Papamichael is also a favorite cinematographer of Greek-American director Alexander Payne, who frequently collaborates with him. In fact, Papamichael was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Payne’s “Nebraska”.
“Ford v Ferrari” was made for $97.6 million. It was released on November 15 and is currently playing in theaters throughout the US.
